Under every great tile floor is the right substrate. Two common choices — uncoupling membrane and cement backer board — do different jobs. Here's how pros decide.
What each one does
- Uncoupling membrane (a dimpled mat) lets the tile and subfloor move independently, so seasonal movement and small cracks below don't telegraph up through the tile. Many systems also waterproof when seams are sealed.
- Cement backer board gives a stable, dimensionally consistent base over wood or concrete and a great bonding surface — but it's not crack-isolation and isn't waterproof on its own.
Crack isolation is the deciding factor
If the floor moves — wood subfloors, slabs prone to hairline cracks, or radiant heat — an uncoupling membrane is the better insurance against cracked tile and grout. For a solid, already-stable base where you just need a sound bonding surface, backer board is proven and economical.
Height, weight and speed
Uncoupling membrane is thin and light — great for matching adjacent floor heights and for upper floors where weight matters — and it installs fast in one bonded layer. Backer board adds thickness and weight and takes more screws and seams.
