Here is an ordering mistake we watch contractors make almost every week, and it costs them a return, a delay, or a callback two years later.
They order a square drain grate. The photo looks like a complete drain. It arrives, and it is a piece of trim.
The listing says it out loud
Read a GURU square drain product page carefully and you will find a line very close to this: System not included. System is included with the Square Drain Connector.
That sentence is doing a lot of work and it is easy to scroll past. What it means in plain terms:
- The grate is the visible top piece. It sits in the finished tile floor. It is the part your client sees and picks a finish for.
- The connector is the part underneath that bonds the drain body to your waterproofing membrane. It is the reason the assembly does not leak.
A grate without a connector is a decorative cover over an unsealed penetration in the middle of your shower floor. That is the single worst place in the whole build to improvise a detail.
Why this happens so often
Three reasons, and none of them are the contractor's fault:
- The product photo shows the finished look. A grate photographs like a drain because in a finished shower, the grate is all you can see.
- Finish selection drives the search. A client picks brushed, polished, black or bronze, so the contractor searches by finish and lands on the grate page. The connector has no finish, so it never comes up in that search.
- Kits hide the problem. Contractors who normally buy a complete Superkit never see this, because the kit already contains the connector. The gap only appears when someone buys piece by piece, which is exactly when they are least likely to catch it.
What to order, and how to decide
Two options, and the choice is not really about price.
The connector on its own

The connector kit

Here is the honest argument for the kit, and it is not upselling. The small individual seals go out of stock independently and often. As of today, some of those small parts are at zero on their own while the kits that contain them are in stock. If you buy the connector alone and then discover you also need a seal that is unavailable, you have a shower you cannot finish. The kit is insurance against a stalled job, and a stalled job costs more than $118 in labor before lunch.
Match the material to your waste line
ABS and PVC are not interchangeable and this is not a preference. The connector body has to solvent weld to your existing drain line.
- ABS is the black pipe. Common in older construction and in much of the West and Midwest.
- PVC is the white pipe. Common in newer construction and much of the South and East.

Where the connector sits in the build
Rough sequence on a square drain shower, so you can see why the connector is load-bearing and not an accessory:
- Drain line roughed in and set to height.
- Connector bonded to the waste line.
- Pre-sloped tray set and bedded.
- Waterproofing membrane bonded to the tray and lapped onto the connector. This is the moment the assembly becomes watertight, and it is only possible because the connector gives the membrane something to bond to.
- Banding at corners and the curb, patches at penetrations.
- Flood test.
- Tile.
- Grate set into the finished floor.
Notice the grate is step eight. It is the last thing that happens and it touches nothing structural. That is the clearest way to understand why it cannot be the thing that seals your shower.
The shortcut if you would rather not think about it

Can I use a grate from one brand with a connector from another?

Linear systems have their own connector arrangement and their own compatibility rules. If you are speccing linear, confirm the tray and drain are a matched pair, because not every linear grate works with every linear tray.
Is the connector reusable if I demo a shower?
No. It is bonded to both the waste line and the membrane. Budget a new one on every build.
