Route the Cable, Respect the Spacing

Follow the heating manufacturer's spacing chart exactly: tighter runs where feet land, and consistent spacing everywhere else so the floor heats evenly with no stripes. Never cross or overlap cable, never cut it to fit, and keep it clear of the drain zone and any expansion joints. Plan the thermostat sensor location between cable runs before mortar touches anything.

Protect the Cable While You Tile

The most expensive mistake on a heated floor is a trowel nick on install day. Work with the flat side first over cable areas, keep metal edges controlled, and test the circuit's resistance before, during and after tiling so a fault is caught while it is still fixable. Wear knee protection and keep foot traffic off unprotected cable, with gear from the kneepads collection doing double duty here.

Wet Rooms: Heat Plus Waterproofing

In bathrooms the heated field usually stops at the shower, where the waterproofing system takes over. Coordinate the two layers at the transition and keep each system inside its own manufacturer's rules. The result is a warm dry floor outside the shower and a sealed wet zone inside it.

Can heating cable go directly under any tile?

Porcelain and ceramic are the standard choices and conduct heat well. Follow the heating manufacturer's compatibility guidance for stone and specialty surfaces.

Do I still need an uncoupling membrane with floor heat?

Heat-routing membranes combine both jobs: they hold the cable and decouple the tile from substrate movement. That is why pros prefer them over loose-laid cable.

Why test resistance three times?

Because it timestamps the damage. If the reading changes after tiling, you know which stage caused it and what to open up.
