Three routes, depending on where the surface sits. Inside the shower envelope the pan and the seams get rebuilt either way; the overlay products below are for the walls and the dry-area floors around it.
- Walls, over sound old ceramic. GURU WATER-STOP wall board, 3 ft x 5 ft x 1/2 in., SKU IBU9312. An XPS foam core with the WATER-STOP sheet bonded on at the factory, so one panel levels the wall and carries the waterproofing. The Problem Is What You Cannot See
Tiling over tile in a shower seals the existing assembly in place, including whatever moisture, hairline failures or degraded waterproofing already live behind it. If the old waterproofing has a weakness, the new layer hides it while the framing keeps drinking. You inherit the old shower's failure timeline and put your name on it.
Weight, Thickness and Detail Problems
- Doubled tile thickness moves the wall plane, so trim, valves and the door track no longer land right
- Added weight on old, unknown bonding is a delamination risk on walls
- Drain and curb transitions rarely tolerate the extra height
The Rare Case Where Overlay Works
A structurally sound, fully bonded, dry-area floor outside the wet zone can sometimes take a bonded overlay after proper prep and with a suitable membrane. Inside the shower envelope itself, demo down to studs and rebuild the waterproofing. It is the only way to warranty the work.

Can I tile over tile on a shower floor?
No. The pan, slope and drain flange assembly cannot be trusted or corrected through an overlay. Rebuild the pan.
Can I tile over tile on a bathroom floor outside the shower?

How do I bid the demo without scaring the client?
